Founded on June 1st, 2013, OneMonth is a for-profit online course provider that offers students technology-based courses that, as the name suggests, take only one month to complete and teach a set of vocational skills necessary for a particular coding job. As a result, the company’s niche focuses on a smaller market than a provider like Udacity or Udemy. The MOOC platform’s customer base includes employees from Singularity University, Google, Bloomberg, and Y Combinator. As on June 2014, the company has had over 150,000 completed by its user base. Each OneMonth course has a tuition fee of $99.
Course Formats:
Students who enroll in OneMonth courses will gain access to a variety of course videos and code samples intended to help students learn new technology skills. The courses push students to learn by completing certain tasks, like creating a web application or a website. Each course only takes thirty days to complete.
Course Offerings:
OneMonth provides courses that teach students how to use a variety of tools used to create or improve applications and websites. The course introductions often encourage students to devote thirty minutes a day to their work. Students who complete the class will receive certificates of completion for their efforts. Although OneMonth has plans to offer more courses in the future, the company currently only offers five classes:
- A Ruby on Rails course, which teaches students how to create their first web application. In order to achieve this goal, students will learn how to use the Ruby on Rails web application framework and how to write code in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- An HTML & CSS course, through which participants will build their first website. Students who take this course will learn or improve their HTML, CSS, FTP, SEO best practices, Facebook API, and Bootstrap skills. The course is designed to be taken from front-end developers as well as beginners to the world of tech.
- A Stripe Payments class, which will help students implement the Stripe API to accept payments on their Rails applications. Students will build a Ruby on Rails application and learn how to use Stripe, Sendgrid, Heroku, Git, Github, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The course features four hours of videos, the ability to interact with course mentors to receive support, and the code used by those mentors to accept credit card payments on their own web applications.
- A Growth Hacking course, which teaches students how to quickly build an audience for a startup company. The course is designed to teach students the skills necessary to grow their business, plan an execute an A/B test, build a landing page, and optimize conversion rates. The course description cites the importance of “growth hackers” to the emergence of websites such as Facebook, Dropbox, Zynga, LinkedIn, and Pinterest.
- An iOS course, which teaches students how to develop an application for the iPhone using Swift.
The website also has plans to offer courses on web security.
