Università Telematica Internazionale UniNettuno, also known as UNINETTUNO, is a Rome-based private company that provides e-learning courses to its students. The company was founded in 2005, meaning that the company began to offer online courses well before the MOOC moment of 2012. Relatedly, UNINETTUNO offers a variety of non-MOOC courses that can be taken for credit and each MOOC listed on the website corresponds with one of the MOOC provider’s accredited course offerings. The university holds the honor of being the first Massive Open Online Course portal to be created by a European university.
UNINETTUNO’s Massive Open Online Courses are affiliated with the OpenupEd.eu. UNINETTUNO MOOCs are designed to be accessed via personal computer, smart phone, or tablet. While enrollment in a UNINETTUNO MOOC is cost-free, students must pay to enroll in a related course in order to receive credit for their work.
Course Format:
Like many other MOOC platforms, UNINETTUNO’s courses generally use video lectures as their main medium of instruction, with each course listing the number of lectures available to enrolled students. Additionally, UNINETTUNO MOOCs provide links to related to reading materials, like boks, articles, bibliographical reference,s and other websites. These courses also provide message forums through which students can communicate and collaborate with one another.
Course Offerings:
Students are able to enroll and take MOOCs in the six different subject categories, listed below with sample course offerings:
- Engineering Area: Algorithms and Basic Structures, Basic Circuit Theory, Calculus I, Complements of Mathematics
- Communication Area: Aesthetics and Analysis of Artistic Languages, Brand Design, Comparative Literature, Contemporary Critic Art and Exhibitions Models
- Law Area: Bankruptcy Law, Civil Procedural Law, Computer and Legal Law, Constitutional Law
- Psychology Area: Language and Communication, Origins and History of Psychology, Perception, Programs and Intervention Models in Traumatic Situations
- Economics Area: Corporate Finance, Marketing, Statistics and Economic Statistics of Tourism, Economics and Business Management
- Literature Area: Archivists, Contemporary Italian Literature, Cultural Anthropology, Medieval History
Languages:
Currently, UNINETTUNO offers Massive Open Online Courses in four languages:
- Italian, of which there are 110 available MOOCs from which to choose
- English, which comprise 53 of the MOOC provider’s course offerings
- Arabic, with 39 MOOC course offerings
- French, of which there are 25 MOOCs from which to choose
UNINETTUNO currently provides 102 more Italian and 35 more Arabic-language MOOCs than industry-leader Coursera.
Accreditation:
One of the inherent advantages that UNINETTUNO has as an established e-learning university providing Massive Open Online Courses is the built-in ability to refer students to their present course offerings. While students cannot currently receive credit for completing a Massive Open Online Course, they are encouraged to enroll in a related UNINETTUNO university course, with a “Get Credits” button attached to each MOOC course offering.
After being transferred to the related course, students will be able to take a final exam. Before taking the exam, students will have access to a personal tutor, live streaming classrooms, exercises, and message forums. Those who successfully complete the exam will be assigned college credits through the European Credits Transfer System.
